Huuuze Reviews

If I like it, you'll know. If I hate it, you'll REALLY know.

Fark RIP: Isaac Hayes

Anytime a celebrity dies, the members of Fark.com always wish that celebrity a fond farewell. And by "fond farewell", I mean they say some fairly mean (yet funny) things.

With that being said, here are the best comments from the members who are saying "goodbye" to Isaac Hayes (South Park's Chef, "Shaft" songwriter, Scientologist), who passed away today:

  • "Damn. Bernie Mac. Issac Hayes. That sucks big floppy donkey dicks. Who will complete the trifecta?"
  • "Dead black entertainer trifecta now in play..., DENZEL, JUST FARKING STAY IN THE HOUSE!"
  • "At least he's finally free from thetans."
  • "Cedric the Entertainer is looking over his shoulder..."
  • "Oh my god, they killed Isaac Hayes! You b**tards!"

And, my personal favorite Chef moment from South Park...

Video: I Am Rich

As if it weren't bad enough that EIGHT PEOPLE purchased the $1000 "I Am Rich" application for the iPhone, now one of those people has uploaded a video that shows the app in motion.  Again, you'll be banging your head with your keyboard when you see this truly pathetic app contains both typos and the world's lamest mantra, yet still managed to pocket the developer $5600.

I hate stupid geniuses.

Genuis Review: Why Didn't I Think of This!?

For those of you developing iPhone applications, stop what you're doing and check out this app.  The app does absolutely nothing, yet the developer sold EIGHT, yes, EIGHT copies before Apple removed the application without notification.  That's a net profit of $5600 for an application that likely took all of 4 hours to develop.

It's these "stupid genius" ideas that eat away at me.  Argh!

Movie Preview: Gentlemen Broncos

I'm a big fan of Napoleon Dynamite and its director, Jared Hess.  He's been fairly quiet since Nacho Libre was released, but it looks like that's about to change.  His upcoming movie, Gentlemen Broncos, has the following elevator pitch:

A teenager attends a fantasy writers' convention where he discovers his idea has been stolen by an established novelist.

If that weren't enough to make you run to the theater, then check out this YouTube video that features the aforementioned "established novelist", Ronald Chevalier (great name).  In fact, the only thing cooler than his name is his website.

It's slated for a 2009 release, so keep your eyes on the RonaldChevalier.com for additional updates.

Must See TV: Dr. Horrible

If you like Joss Whedon, then this is REQUIRED viewing. It'll make you remember why shows like Buffy, Angel, and Firefly were truly great.

Best line in the movie: "The hammer is my penis.". Classic.

Preview: The Last Guy

Is it just me or have video game designers begun to look back at the "golden age of video games" to help them move forward? Seemingly, more and more games are following a "simple, yet fun" paradigm, thanks in large part to the success of the Wii.

"The Last Guy", an upcoming game for the Playstation 3 appears to follow that design and I cannot wait to get my hands on it. Judge for yourself:

Verizon FiOS TV or Dish Network?

I'm debating on whether or not to make the switch from Dish Network to Verizon FiOS TV.  Let me first caveat this discussion by saying that I LOVE my Dish Network DVR.  Great features, great remote, and it's easy to use.  I've heard mixed opinion about the Verizon DVR, but those were months ago and things could've changed by now.

Regardless, if you've made "the switch", drop me a line and let me know what you think about Verizon's service.

PS: And, yes, I'm aware that image is for DirectTV, not Dish Network.  :)

Tech Review: Snackr RSS Ticker

Yesterday, I talked about Google Reader, easily the best online RSS reader.  Today I'm introducing you to Snackr, a fantastic RSS ticker that runs on Adobe Air.

For those of us fortunate enough to have two monitors, Snackr is an excellent alternative to a desktop RSS client.  As the description implies, Snackr is a ticker that streams your RSS feeds in the same manner as a news ticker.  As the ticker scrolls and you see an item you'd like to read, simply click the item and a pop-up window will appear with the contents of the feed.

For casual RSS users, this free application is incredibly handy.  And, in the next major release of Snackr, it will be integrated with Google Reader!  The ability to sync between the two apps will be invaluable, making Snackr a "must have" for any Google Reader addict.

Tech Review: Google RSS Reader

We use Google for everything: email, directions, photos, etc... Not only that, but I've heard some people still use it for searching.  However, one overlooked gem is Google's RSS Reader.  I'm a big fan of RSS news feeds and Google's online implementation is second-to-none.  It has all of the bells and whistles you'd come to expect from an RSS reader, but I just noticed something that is truly cool.

For as long as I can remember, Reader has allowed you to share articles with friends.  You can do this either via email or tag it for your friends to read when they access their Reader.  However, you now have a third way that will allow you to share your feeds with the world.

If you click the "Shared Items" link in Reader, you'll see an option to "Add a clip".  In a nutshell, this allows you to create a widget (seen below) that can be placed in any webpage.  IMO, it's an extra little "somethin' somethin'" that makes Reader a unique tool and one that should be used by anyone trying to manage an influx of information.

Movie Review: The Dark Knight

Well, you can include me amongst the people giving "The Dark Knight" a positive review. If you liked "Batman Begins", you'll LOVE "The Dark Knight". Heath Ledger, who will undoubtedly receive an Oscar nomination for his better-than-Nicholson portrayal of Batman's arch enemy, was a great mix of likable and creepy as "The Joker". He overshadows every other character on screen and you can't help but feel a little angry when you realize that you won't be seeing him reprise the role in future films.

The only negative is that the movie feels a little long. It logs in at 152 minutes and by the end of it, you feel like you just finished watching a great mini-series rather than a feature-length film. However, this is more of a nitpick than a real criticism. Every minute of the film is necessary to the plot and the end of the movie leaves you wondering what will happen in Batman 3.

In a nutshell, all of the good reviews you're hearing aren't the result of a Hollywood snowball effect. "The Dark Knight" is a great summertime movie and rather than reading about it, you should be watching it.
